Middle of Sha’ban

27 08 2007

We are in the month of sha’ban, tonight being the 15th (or tomorrow according to geographical location).  Sha’ban is a blessed month like all other months with many virtues attached, one particular being the night of Nisf (middle) or the 15th. There are many practices associated with this night, but the best thing to do is to adhere to that which is confirmed in the Sunna, regarding nawaafil prayers, adhkaar, supplication and of course much tasliyya.

Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Gilani recommended the following modality in his Ghunyatu Talibain:

“As for the ritual prayer traditional for the night of mid-Shaban, it consists of one hundred cycles, including one thousand repetitions of Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad (that is to say, ten recitations in each rak’a). This prayer is called Salat al-Khayr, and its blessings are many and varied. Our righteous predecessors used to gather to perform it in congregation. It contains much merit and rich reward. It is reported of al-Hasan [al=Basri], may Allah be well-pleased with him, that he said: ‘Thirty of the companions of the Messenger of Allah [Peace be upon him] related to me that Allah will look seventy times upon one who performs this prayer on this night, and with each glance He will fulfill seventy of that persons needs, the last of them being forgiveness.’”

I forgot all about it. I think some people in UK consider tonight to be the nisf of Sha’ban.

Shahrzad, shaykh abdul Qadir Jaylani was a great Islamic personality, in its true meaning.

Zahraa, you know what this means? there will be a split about Ramadhan and Eid like every other year. argh

same old story every year! We wouldn’t have such problems under the Khilafah as these decisions will be made centrally.

So the Caliph will have the super power to make everyone see the moon simultaniously!!

I dont know what image you have in your mind about a Chaliph, Zahraa. He is little God?! Even prophet couldn’t control people like what you expect from a chaliph!!

And then, moon every where show up in seprated days. Eid el fitr in Malaysia is different from UK. With or whiout chaliph, no difference in movement of moon!

of course there are differences in moonsightings, but how do we explain people sighting moon on three different days in Pakistan or starting Ramadhan or Eid on different days in the UK where moon can’t even be seen?

The only country that moon cant be seen is Afqanistan. By the way, there is astronomical ways to monitor moon even in cloudy nights. Mashallah there are good advantages in astronomy and cosmology! 🙂
It is not related to the post, otherwise i would explain here how they do it. Long story.. 😉

Shahrzad I’ve never been able to see the new moon here in the UK. Its almost impossibility to sight the moon due to the weather, some people resort to the nearest Muslim country, whereas others go with Saudi or just their own country of origin. There is also difference of opinion on whether the moon has to be sighted by the naked eye or can sciences of astronomy be used to calculate. It becomes complicated.. Feel free to explain it if you like 🙂

This is very interesting. I’ve never heard of the prayer before. I’ve missed the opportunity!

Moon sighting is controversial – the yearly controversy I call it.

*sigh*

This problem occurs every year. Kind of used to it by now – not only that, its highly amusing for some who see it as another issue on which Muslims can’t find agreement!

I can understand why we have a problem but how does it become a problem in Muslim countries? Why doesn’t the official media announce the sighting of moon and everyone just follow it through?

There is a TV program as “Sky of Night” in Iranian TV. The program’s belonged to channal 4 and in fact channel of science and thechnology. Along Ramadan, they focus on sigting moon. Really interesting.. People can sign moon via the program..

Anyway, i really liked to come to this idea that for unity between muslims, we all start ramadan together. But i Cant. Yet it is like time of Azan, different region to region. Starting ramadan in Iran and Malaysia at least has 1 and 2 days difference with Saudi Arabia, So those muslims who live in west, for example UK, can go to ramadan by a country close to them such as france or Ireland. Yet they can not choose Arabia’s time as start for it has much difference..
Complicated..

As for gathering in the mosque for a particular fixed prayer, such as gather for 100 rakats in which 1,000 QulhuwaAllahuAhad are read every time, this is a reprehensible innovation, which none of the imams have allowed. [Ibn Taymiyya, al-Fatawa al-Kubra, 2; 222-138]
